In modern day, in a world open to any kind of unfiltered and unchecked facts, its easy to spread misinformation and they do spread fast. A lot of fans may be dedicated fans of the mythology, but may not be readers or researchers - they didn't read all the magazine articles on the subject and didn't check all the extras on home video releases. Nor they are required to of course. But back in the days you either tried to get your hands on magazines with articles or interviews on the matter, or you simply assumed things.
But nowadays, the majority of newer or passive fans get their information from the most unreliable source - clickbaits, shorts or “Did you know” videos. And I've been told this is where that false statement came from: that Nancy Allen agreed for RoboCop 3 under the condition that her character, Anne Lewis, will be killed off since she wanted out of the series. That is not true at all, and it probably came from the Alien 3 story. Sigourney Weaver agreed to do it only under the condition that Ripley will die, because she didn't want the series to keep going endlessly. But that was completely not the case with Nancy Allen. Actually, she was not happy about killing her character and the director and the producer had to break the news to her during their meeting.
Fred Dekker was directly asked by the host on RoboCop 3 Shout Factory Bluray Edition Audio Commentary about the rumors.
Host: Was it true that she (Nancy Allen) wanted to come back under the condition that her character was killed off?
Fred Dekker: There was a day that Pat Crawley, the producer and I, took her to lunch at Hugos at West Hollywood and the agenda was we had to break it to her that we wanted to kill her in this movie for emotional reasons to give Robocop a reason to rebel and become part of the resistance and she was not happy about that at all. So I don't know where this came from. It was not my experience. It was a decision we made and she was not happy about it.
Pat Crawley recalled it on the Delta City Shuffle: The Making of RoboCop 3 Documentary from Shout Bluray
Pat Crawley (Producer): Fred and I we figured that dramatically we essentially needed to get rid of the Lewis character so that Robocop can then have to make new friends, and have to be with a new set of people, but just to tell an actor that your characters gonna get killed, it was tough
And Nancy Allen's recollection from the very same documentary:
Nancy Allen: I remember going to sleep that night and waking up the next morning and I thought 'oh they're gonna kill me'. I just knew it. I just knew it. And I went to meet Fred Dekker for breakfast/lunch something like that and we talked and he was very, you know, casually outlining the picture and very softly and gently went up to the fact that they're going to..'its gonna be beautiful' and I said 'I know, you're gonna kill her, I knew it!'
In another source:
Nancy Allen: So I went to speak to Fred about what he was going to do and I got a premonition right before seeing him: They were going to kill her'. I just knew it. So I wasn't surprised. I did think it was a big mistake. I thought, 'Okay, so they are dropping all of the elements that made this work. They are not going to wait for Peter. They are getting rid of Dan O'Herlihy. They are killing me' (RoboCop: The Definitive History book)
